How to Autofill a Job Application from Your CV
A lot of job applications ask you to upload your CV, then make you type the same jobs, dates and qualifications into boxes on the next page. The file is already there. You still enter it by hand. CV autofill is for that second page: the CV you stored in TypePro goes into those empty fields when you ask, so you are not copying your own document line by line.
The quick answer:
- Upload one PDF or Word (.docx) CV in your TypePro account, and agree to store it for this purpose.
- Open the application in Chrome or Edge with the TypePro extension on.
- Click into the form. If it looks like work experience or education, TypePro shows Fill from your CV.
- Press it. Check every field before you submit. Not now hides the offer for that form.
Nothing is entered until you press the button. Fields you have already typed in are left alone.
CV autofill is not browser autofill
| Browser autofill | CV autofill in TypePro | |
|---|---|---|
| What it knows | Details saved in the browser, such as name and address | The single CV file on your account |
| When it runs | When the site marks a field and you accept the browser prompt | When you press Fill from your CV |
| What it writes | Short saved facts | Experience, education, a short about-you, skills, and contact details, if the form asks and the CV says |
| What it will not do | Write a paragraph about a job | Invent an employer, a date, a degree, or a skill |
Browser autofill is still the right tool for a shipping address. See how autocomplete, autofill and the other typing features differ. CV autofill is only for application forms.
What you upload
In the TypePro dashboard, open CV and upload one file. PDF and Word .docx are accepted. The file has to contain real text. A scan that is only a picture of the page will not upload, because there is nothing to read.
You tick a consent box first: the CV is stored for your account and used only when you press Fill from your CV. It is not used for ordinary writing suggestions. Remove it from the dashboard, or it is removed when you close the account. You can also download the file you uploaded. One CV is stored at a time. Uploading another replaces it.
The original file stays on the server. When you fill a form, the extension sends the field labels, not the CV.
When the button appears
The offer shows when you focus a field on a form that has a work-experience block or an education block (a job title and employer, or a school and a qualification, with the usual date fields). A lone "name and email" form is not enough.
You will see two actions: Fill from your CV and Not now. Not now dismisses it for that form until you start a new browser session. If TypePro is paused, or the site is one it skips (password managers, banking, healthcare), the offer does not appear.
What gets filled
Only empty fields, and only from facts written in the CV.
| Section on the form | Filled from the CV when the labels match |
|---|---|
| Work experience | One row per job: title, employer, dates, what you did |
| Education | One row per school or qualification |
| About you | A summary, "about me", or personal statement already in the CV |
| Skills | Skills the CV actually lists |
| Contact | Name, email, phone, city, LinkedIn, website, or portfolio, if the CV includes them |
If the form has an Add button for another job or another qualification, TypePro can press it so further roles from the CV have a row, up to eight. A dropdown is filled only when the CV's wording matches one of the options. A box you have already started stays as you left it. Filled fields are outlined briefly so you can see what changed.
If nothing matched, the button says so and the form stays blank.
What it will not do
- It will not invent employers, dates, degrees, or skills that are not in the file.
- It will not overwrite text you typed.
- It will not answer sensitive questions: equal opportunity, gender, ethnicity, disability, veteran status, criminal record, nationality, religion, pronouns, or a consent / terms tick-box.
- It will not write a tailored cover letter for that employer. A box labelled as a summary can receive summary text from the CV. A letter that has to mention the company still has to be written by you. Suggestions while you type are a different feature. See autocomplete vs AI-generated text.
- It will not upload the CV file into the employer's "attach your CV" control. Sites often want both: the file, then the same details typed out on the next page. You still attach the file yourself. TypePro fills the boxes that repeat it.
Read the form before you send it. You are responsible for what the employer receives.
Privacy
The CV is account data, separate from your knowledge-base documents. Hosting is in the EU. The same questions you would ask of any tool that stores a CV apply. See typing extension privacy and the data protection summary, which states that the file is used only for this button and is deleted when you remove it or close the account.
Frequently asked questions
Why do applications make me retype my CV? Many take the file, then ask for each job, date and qualification in its own box on the next page. TypePro fills those empty boxes from the CV you stored. You still attach the file where the form asks for it, and you still check what was entered.
How do I autofill a job application from my CV? Upload one PDF or Word CV in TypePro, open the application with the extension, and press Fill from your CV. Check the empty fields it completed.
Does CV autofill replace browser autofill? No. The browser still fills saved contact details. CV autofill fills the employment and education parts of an application from your file.
Will it fill a form I have already started? It skips fields that already have text. Empty fields in the same form can still be filled.
What if my CV is a scanned PDF? If the file has no readable text, the upload is refused. Export or save a PDF or Word file that contains real text, then upload that.
Can I delete the CV? Yes. Remove it on the CV tab in TypePro, or it is deleted when you close the account. Filling stops once there is no file stored.
