Looking for a Grammarly Alternative?
If you are looking for a Grammarly alternative, the useful question is when you want help. Some tools review writing that is already on the page. TypePro starts earlier: it offers the next words while you are still composing. If you later change your mind, you can select what you wrote and ask for a rewrite.
Grammarly now describes a lot of its help as AI agents. If you still want a lightweight, customisable writing assistant, that is the job TypePro is built for.
The quick answer:
- You type in the web field you already use.
- Grey text suggests a continuation. Tab accepts it, Shift+Tab takes one word, Esc dismisses it.
- Nothing is inserted until you accept it.
- To revise, select at least four words. A Rewrite chip appears, or press Ctrl+Space. You accept the replacement, or you leave your text as it was.
Help while you compose
TypePro is a Chrome and Edge extension. It works in ordinary web text fields: email, messages, docs and forms in the browser. It does not ask you to move the draft into a separate editor.
The suggestion follows the words around the cursor. You keep the opening and the point. The tool only proposes what might come next. That is context-aware autocomplete. For how that differs from generating a whole draft, see autocomplete vs AI-generated text.
You can shape those suggestions without leaving the extension:
| Control | What you set |
|---|---|
| Writing mode | Everyday, Sales, Customer Service, Legal or Admin |
| Suggestion length | Short, medium or long |
| This site | Pause TypePro on one site, or everywhere |
Additional modes and learning from your own writing are part of Pro. A personal library of documents can be used so suggestions draw on material you uploaded. On a Business account, a team can share terminology and style guidance.
If you change your mind
Composing faster does not mean the first wording has to stay. Select a passage of at least four words. TypePro shows a rewrite of that selection, and you can add a short instruction. The new wording replaces the selection only when you accept it. Clicking away leaves the original.
That rewrite is for a passage you chose. TypePro does not walk the page marking corrections in text you have not selected, and it does not grade an essay, find citations, or check a document for plagiarism.
What to expect in practice
- Suggestions need a network connection and a signed-in account.
- Password fields are skipped. So are many banking, healthcare and password-manager sites, unless you opt in on that site.
- Some custom editors do not accept the suggestion. If a box ignores it, the tool cannot force the text in.
- A suggestion can be wrong. Read it before you accept it. A rewrite can miss your meaning. Read that too.
Check typepro.co.uk/features for the current controls, and typing extension privacy for what happens to text the extension sees.
Frequently asked questions
Is TypePro a Grammarly alternative? It is an alternative if you want help composing in the browser, with the option to rewrite a selection afterwards. It is not a full proofreading suite.
Does TypePro correct text that is already written? Only the passage you select. Highlight at least four words and use Rewrite, or press Ctrl+Space. You decide whether to accept the replacement.
Can I change how the suggestions sound? Yes. Switch writing mode and suggestion length in the extension. Pro can also learn from how you write. Business teams can share terminology and style.
Will it write the message for me? No. You start the sentence. TypePro offers the next part, and you accept or ignore it.
